LOCKE | John R. Lane, 82, died unexpectedly at home in Locke on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012. He was born in Genoa on Jan. 13, 1930 to Milo and Lenora Upson Lane. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Helen Washburn Lane. Survivors include; sons, Gary Lane, of Groton, Brian Lane, Dale (Karen) Lane, of Groton; a stepdaughter, Ann DeMond (Kurt) Christofferson, of Mainesburg, Pa.; a stepson, Robert DeMond, of St. Petersburg, Fla; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one step-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; a sister, Lucille (George) Luther, of Lakeland Fla.; and brother, Donald (Viola) Lane, of Groton. He was predeceased by his brother, C. Richard Lane. John was well known and an accomplished horseman who participated in his early years in Northeast professional rodeos (PRCA) and in local horseshoes as a calf roper and steer wrestler. His first love was training rodeo horses and riders as well. He was a farmer in early years and was employed at Cornell University for 27 years. After retirement he continued to train horses and riders until his move to Locke, where he was storyteller at Barb's Diner and in the backyard bunkhouse where he kept his memorabilia and photographs. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday Nov. 28 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 10117 Route 90, Genoa with the Rev. Kurt Christofferson officiating.
