AUBURN | Susan Kapcha Smith, 96, of Auburn, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012 at the Finger Lakes Center for Living following an extended illness. Sue was a life resident of the Auburn area, the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Sluty Kapcha. She was employed by Auburn Memorial Hospital, retiring after 23 years of service. She was a member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. She was the first woman to serve as senior warden of the church, serving for 29 years. She also oversaw St. Nicholas Cemetery during this time. She is survived by her husband, Paul E. Smith, of Auburn; her son and daughter-in-law, Paul E. Smith II and Margaret; grandson, Michael and Danielle Smith, and great-grandchildren, Hailee and Alex Smith, all of Auburn. She is also survived by her brother, John Kapcha, of Auburn; godchild, Sister Onuphria Wick, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Simkulet, Ann Erniss, Helen Kostisick, Nancy and Margaret Kapcha, and her brother, George Kapcha. Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, from the Plis Funeral Home, and 9:30 a.m., in St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. Burial will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Half Acre. Friends are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at the funeral home, 220 State St., Auburn.
