PHELPS - Robert J. Edwards, 85, died peacefully on Monday (October 8, 2012) at his home.
Friends may call on Thursday (October 11) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Cheney Funeral Home, 70 Main Street in Phelps. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. A.J. Tierson officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
It is requested that in memory of Mr. Edwards, memorial donations be made to the House of John, 14 Spring Street, Clifton Springs, 14432.
Mr. Edwards was born on March 11, 1927 in Manchester, the son of the late George and Ida Collins Edwards. He worked on the Lehigh Railroad, at Stromberg Carlson and retired from Xerox in 1981.
Mr. Edwards was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in occupation forces in Austria. He was past Post Commander of Post 34, a member of Chef De Gore Passe Voiture 322 Ontario Co. He was a 50+ year member of the Phelps American Legion Post 457 and a member of the VFW Post 2883 in Newark.
He is survived by his four children, Roberta (Richard) Beniamino of Phelps, William Edwards of Clifton Springs, James (Donna) Edwards of Rochester and Thomas Edwards of Phelps; eight grandchildren, Kristine Walters Beniamino, Tony (Maribeth) Beniamino, Amie (Patrick) Doane, Jon (Melissa) Edwards, Alyssa (Shawn) Douglass, Jason Edwards, Schyler Edwards and Alexandria Edwards; three great-grandchildren, Jacklyn, Connor and McKenzie; his sister Rose Roth of Tonowanda.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Warren, Raymond and George Jr.
