GENEVA – John William Kenney Sr.,100, passed peacefully on Thursday, (April 24, 2014) at his daughter's home in Geneva surrounded by his loving family and friends.
There will be no prior calling hours.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday (April 29) in Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Clarence Butler, retired Rector and the Rev. Peter W. Peters, Interim Rector will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
At the request of John W. Kenney memorial donations may be made to Hobart and William Smith Colleges Dean James L. Henderson "75 Memorial Scholarship and/or to Trinity Church in Geneva.
John was born on January 26, 1914 in Geneva, N.Y. to the late Herman F. and Josephine LePeon Kenney. He was a graduate of Geneva High
School in 1933 and was subsequently accepted to Howard University School of Dentistry. However, he was unable to enroll because he began work at the Geneva Foundry as a journeyman mold maker to provide for his family. He lived in Geneva most of his life, moving to Canandaigua after the passing of his wife, where he lived at 80 Parish Street for over 25 years. He made many friends, serving as the President of the Tenants' Association, and enjoyed the activities and travel offered.
John was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Geneva. He served his community as a leader in the Boy Scouts, Sea Explorer Scouts, co-founder of Geneva Babe Ruth, Meals on Wheels, Volunteer for Geneva Center of Concern, a founding member of the Geneva Civil Defense Organization, and a sexton of St. Stephen's Church in Geneva. He loved fishing, playing cards, baseball, traveling, and most of all, bowling with his team at Sunset Bowl till he was 92 years of age. He was voted into the Finger Lakes Bowling Hall of Fame.
On January 25, 2014, he celebrated his 100th birthday at Club 86 in Geneva. Over 200 friends and family members honored and celebrated his life, with proclamations and citations from city and state officials, as well as President Obama.
He is survived by his children, John (Wendy), Elizabeth (the Late James) Henderson, Gregory A. (Judy), Gary S. (Elizabeth and former wife Carolyn). He leaves 11 grandchildren, Tyrone Henderson (Dan Siford), Debra (Jim) Rideout, DeAnn K. (Gary) Garrett, Gregory W. (former wife Jane), David A. (fiancee Jennifer Fletcher), Scott M. (Amie), Gary S. Kenney, Christopher Kenney, Michael J. (Kristen), Elizabeth (finance David Mileweski), and Jennifer Kenney; nine great-grandchildren, four step grandchildren and one step great-grandchild and his very special family friends; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Richardson, Harriett Lee, and Joyce Johnson Kenney.
He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Rose Edith (Jones) Kenney, a daughter Connie, brothers Pat, Gordon, Norman, Charles, Floyd, Herrold, Raymond, and Cyril Kenney, and sisters Eloise Carter and Ann McLauren.
