Family and friends may call on Friday (March 21) from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan, N.Y. Nelson's funeral service will be on Saturday (March 22) at St. Michael's Church in Penn Yan at 11:00 a.m.
The family requests no flowers, but asks that you consider making a memorial donation to Yates County Habitat for Humanity, PO Box 391, Penn Yan, N.Y. 14527 in Nelson's name.
Nelson was born April 17, 1918, in Buffalo, N.Y., to the late Nelson & Lillian (Carson) Hopkins II. Even as a boy, he dreamt of being a dairyman. After teaching radio in the Army Air Corps during World War II and working for U.S. Steel in Buffalo, he and Maxine, his wife of 67 years, raised their family in Sheldon, New York. Retiring to Penn Yan, Nelson enjoyed watching the revitalization of dairy farming and other agriculture in Yates County. Always a family man (he claimed his five children were his "best crop") and a great reader, Nelson was most proud of his work in the church and the continued success of the local Habitat for Humanity.
He is survived by his children, Kathryn (William) Kavanagh, Nelson (Mary) Hopkins, Michael (Ellen) Hopkins, Timothy (Sandra) Hopkins, Gregory (Dinny) Hopkins; grandchildren, Mark, Greg, Kristin, Rebecca, Nelson IV, Tracey, Damon, Carson, Nathanael, Zachary, Tiffany, Brittney, and Gregory; several great-grandchildren.
Nelson was predeceased by his wife, Maxine Wichlaz Hopkins on August 29, 2012.
