ROMULUS - SSG John J. Abeline (US Army retired), age 66, of 5854 State Route 96, died at the Canandaigua V.A. Medical Center on Wednesday (Octo ber 23), following an extended cancer illness. The family will receive friends at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 South Main Street in Ovid, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday (November 2, 2013). Mili tary honors will observed by the family at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Romulus. John was born in Herkimer, N.Y. on June 3, 1947, a son of the late Earl J. and Helen (Pratt) Abeline. He proudly served his country in the US Army for 23 years, until his retirement in 1992. John returned to the Herki mer area after many years abroad in the Army, and began working for the Herkimer County Sheriff's Office and Fire Depart ment. He made his home in Burdett for a number of years, and for the past three years, lived in Rom u lus. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending as much time as he could in the great outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, Susan of Romulus; a son, Kyle (Erika) Abeline of Willard and their daughters, Lexi and Bella; a sister, Micke Null of Herki mer; his stepchildren, Kevin Snyder of Avon, N.Y. and Jill Snyder of Crom well, Md. and a step-granddaughter, Crystal Snyder.
