Geneva - William A. Brooks, age 71, of Reeds Bay, passed away on Sunday (October 20, 2013) at home surrounded by his loving family. At Bill's wishes there will be no prior calling hours. Private services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 27) at the Hydrant Hose Company, 79 Geneva St., Geneva. Parking is available in the Exchange Place Parking Lot at the rear of the fire house.
Bill was born on June 9, 1942 in Geneva, the son of the late Asa and Lucy Jennings Brooks. He was a graduate of Geneva High School Class of 1960 and received a full Scholarship from the University of Pittsburgh for Wrestling. Bill graduated from SUNY Cortland and began working at Asa Brooks Sports Shop in Downtown Geneva for two years. He then starting teaching part time at Geneva High School which turned into full time for a 32-year career as a Physical Education Teacher. During that time he coached Wrestling, JV Lacrosse, Cross Country and the Rifle Team. Bill also worked at the Ontario County Sheriff's Office for 23 years and was appointed a Sergeant of the Marine and Recreational Vehicle Division. During his time at the Sheriff's Office Bill was very active with Camp Good Days and took part in the Tall Ships Detail in Rochester. Bill loved to fish and operated Good Days Charters on Canandaigua Lake for several years. He was a life member of the Hydrant Hose Company of the Geneva Fire Department and served as Captain, President and Secretary. Bill became very active at Midlakes High School with the Football, Wrestling, Lacrosse Programs and the Friends of Midlakes Athletic Association receiving the Friend Award for the 2009-2010 school year.
Bill is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia; daughters, Traci (Sean) Strassburg of Seneca Castle and Barbara Middlebrook of Phelps; grandchildren, Tyler William Brooks-Lambert, Robert Lee Middlebrook III, Nicholas Asa Strassburg and Kiia Lee Middlebrook; sisters-in-law, Barbara Kerr of Geneva, Cheryle Cecere of Farmington; brothers-in-law, Lee Maynard of New Mexico, Terry (Theresa) Cecere of Canandaigua; several nieces and nephews; faithful puppy, Maggie Mae; racket ball partner, John Hicks; special friends, Gary Baxter, Bill Reeser, Guy Spader, Sonny Reale and Dan Feldman.
Bill was predeceased besides his parents; his sister, Helen Maynard; mother-in-law, Angela Cecere; father-in-law, Anthony Cecere; brother-in-law, Robert C. Kerr, Sr.; and nephew, Robert C. Kerr, Jr.
