She was born in Shelburne, the daughter of Harold E. and Flora R. (Schechterle) Smead. Ellie was a 1940 graduate of Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls. Prior to retirement in 1986 she was secretary to the superintendent of the Mohawk Trail Regional School District. She was employed by the school district for 20 years. She was a member of the Shelburne Falls Area Women's Club and treasurer of the Bridge of Flowers and also a member of the VFW Post 8503 Ladies Auxiliary in Shelburne Falls. She was a member of Trinity Church. Amazing Ellie. Family and friends were the centerpiece of the garden that was the life of Ellie Baker. Her capacity for loving and caring for her family, friends and members of the greater Shelburne Falls community was infinite. She was lively, energetic, and helpful to the very end. Her sense of humor amazed everyone she spoke with. She took great joy in sharing her love of family, friends, Shelburne Falls, the Bridge of Flowers, festive hats, decorative socks, flowers, birds, crossword puzzles, and her charitable works. All who knew her knew how special she was. She will be sorely missed. Fair winds!
