Dundee, NY/Danbury, CT - André Lopes Mendes, age 81, of Dundee, formerly of Danbury, Conn. died Friday, June 28, 2013 at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, in Penn Yan, N.Y.
Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today, Sunday (June 30) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee; where a Catholic funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Monday (July 1). Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dundee Fire Company Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, N.Y. 14837.
André was born April 21, 1932 in Chancery, France, the son of the late Fernando and Alizira Borges Mendes Lopes. On April 28, 1957 in Ferreiroz do Dão, Portugal, he married the former Margarida P. Da Luz Pereira. They moved to Danbury, Connecticut in 1961. He was a retired foreman employed by Austin Paving, of Danbury, Conn., for 27 years, and for A & J Paving part time after his retirement. Mr. Mendes was a long time member of Portuguese American Club, the Sons of Portugal, the Danbury Moose Lodge, a Life Member of the North American Hunting Club, and the NRA. In his younger years, he loved rabbit hunting, and watching Boxing, and Soccer on TV, and socializing at "Marcel's Place."
He is loved and will be dearly missed by his wife of 56 years, Margarida P. Mendes in Dundee; a son, Marcel L. (Donna) Mendes of Poughkeepsie; a daughter, Cilinia M. (Baird) Booth of Dundee; three granddaughters, Kayla M. Mendes of Poughkeepsie, Corrina M and Cara L. Booth both of Dundee; two brothers, Marcel (Natalie) Mendes, and Roger (Betty) Lopes both of Danbury, Conn.; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by a brother Antonio in France.
