PENN YAN - Viola Kjar Christensen, 100 years old, passed away on April 25, 2013 at her home where she has been cared for by her family for the past year. Calling hours will be held on Friday (May 3rd) from 5 to 8 p.m. at Weldon Funeral Home, 102 E. Main Street, Penn Yan and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday (May 4th) at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 135 Hamilton Street, Penn Yan, with services at 12 noon followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. Paul's Lutheran church or a charity of one's choice .
Viola was born August 7, 1912 to Nels and Katherine Rasmussen Kjar in Dike, Iowa, the oldest of their eight children. She visited relatives in Denmark with her father in 1922 and celebrated her 10th birthday in route. Viola graduated from the Cedar Falls Iowa High School in 1929, then moved to Yates County with her entire family in 1931. On October 8, 1933 she was married to George H. Christensen and they celebrated 65 years of marriage before his death in 1999. After raising a family, she was involved with several organizations and activities including church, serving on the Yates County Fair Board for several years and volunteered at Soldiers & Sailors Hospital. Viola started the Antique Show at the Yates County Fairgrounds and worked for the US Census Bureau. In later years she and her husband had a booth at the Windmill and sold antiques and collectibles.
Viola is survived by her children; Helen (Edward) Dickson, Charles E. (Geraldine) Christensen, Pauline (Donald) Carroll, David (Sherry) Christensen, and Donald N. (Phyllis) Christensen; 21 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Victor Kjar of Waterloo and Raymond Kjar of Himrod; two cousins, Dale (Helen) Modlin of Iowa and Torkild Kjar of Denmark, two sister-in-laws, Gladys Kjar of Penn Yan and Dorothy Kjar of Geneva and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, sisters, Marie Griswold and Agnes Smith; brothers, Harry and Robert and Ronald Kjar.
