Senator Charles Schumer stopped at Muranda Cheese Company in Seneca County Wednesday, vowing to fight for the growing Finger Lakes cheese industry against a threat from the European Union. In ongoing trade talks, the EU wants to prohibit cheese makers from using familiar names like gouda, feta and provolone, unless those cheeses are made in specific regions of Europe. Schumer says that would be a crushing blow to producers in the Finger Lakes.
Schumer is also supporing Cornell University's application for a USDA SARE grant that he says would provide expertise and a major marketing partner for Finger Lakes cheese producers.
Tom Murray of Muranda says he appreciates Schumer's support.
Schumer says US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is sympathetic to the concerns of New York cheese producers.
