Victor Student Comes Down With Whooping Cough

An email went out to students, parents and staff today saying that a student at Victor Senior High School has been diagnosed with pertussis, commonly called whooping cough. The illness is very contagious and starts as a mild upper respiratory infection with sneezing, runny nose, low grade fever and cough. The cough gets progressively worse over a period of weeks to the point where sufferers make a gaspy whooping noise.

Ontario County Public Health Director Mary Beer says pertussis can be prevented with proper vacinnations and booster shots.
