A Seneca County Winery has been named the best, and a red wine from Schuyler County is tops at this year's New York State Fair.
Swedish Hill Winery in Fayette was named Top Winery, and Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards' 2010 Cabernet Franc won the Best of Show and Best of Red awards in the New York State Fair Commercial Wine Competition.
This is the first year the fair has given a Top Winery award. The competition, one of 49 hosted by the State Fair, was judged earlier this month. Sixty-two of the state’s 300-plus wineries and distilleries entered more than 360 wines, which is more than were entered last year.
Swedish Hill won its award after earning a double gold medal for its 2012 Blue Waters Chardonnay Riesling ($17.99) and gold medals for its 2012 Cayuga White ($9.99), Viking Red ($13.99) and Classic Concord ($12.99).
“We expect that the 2012 vintage will go down as one of the greatest in history, probably one of the best across the board for whites and reds,” winery owner Dave Peterson said in a news release.
