On Video: Karlsen Admits To Killing His Son

Crying in the the interview room, Karl Karlsen of Romulus told police he did knock a pick-up truck off a jack, crushing his son's death, but he says it was an accident.

More of the videotaped testimony Karl Karlsen gave to police in connection with the death of his son was shown in a Seneca County courtroom yesterday.  Its part a on-going hearing to determine if the video tape and other evidence can be used at his upcoming murder trial.

On the tape, Karlsen then admitted that he didn't try to lift the pickup truck off his son Levi. Karlsen said he panicked and left his son under the truck to die that day in November 2008.

The nine-hour, 42-minute interrogation is being played in open court because Karlsen's lawyer says Karlsen's constitutional rights were violated. The testimony and statement are being reviewed as part of a request by Karlsen's attorney to have them excluded from the trial.

17 days before the death, Levi Karlsen took out a life insurance policy that paid his father 700 thousand dollars if he died accidentally. Karlsen also faces insurance fraud and other charges.

On the video, Karklsen is interviewed by State Police Investigator Jeffrey Arnold and Seneca County Sheriff's Investigator John Cleere.

The last hour-and-a-half of the almost 10 hour investigation vidoe will be shown in seneca County Court on August 2nd.

More of the Karlsen interview was played in court Monday.  In the tape Karlsen admitted to police he dropped the car on Levi but it was accidental.  After Karlsen gave the testimony and signed a statement the day after last Thanksgiving, he was arrested and charged with second degree murder in the death of Levi Karlson. Authorities plan to use the testimony and statement in Karlson's trial beginning in October.  There is still more to be heard from the tape.  Court will reappear to finish August 2nd.
