The Tompkins County Legislature will consider a ban on takeout plastic bags when it meets Monday. The Tompkins County Environmental Management Council is proposing the ban and will brief lawmakers on its proposal. The ban would affect stores of five thousand square feet or greater next beginning next January 1st and all stores in January, 2015. The law would establish a charge for paper bags, which would help stores recover the cost of switching to paper. A public hearing is required before the ban can take effect. The Legislature meets at 3:30 Monday afternoon at the old jail at 125 East Court Street in Ithaca.
