Palmyra Fire Suspect In Custody

UPDATE: The Wayne County District Attorney says a suspect is in custody for the May 3rd fire in Palmyra.

The District Attorney says the case is going to the grand jury in two weeks. The fire displaced many residents and businesses and damaged 4 buildings.

We will update you on this developing story as we get more information.

PREVIOUSLY: Police have called the Palmyra fire that destroyed four buildings and left many homeless, suspiscious and now they have a person of interest.

Investigators believe that the person intentionally started the fire.

The area is still blocked off and businesses are still shut down. For Palmyra residents, it is a tragic daily reminder.

The person of interest has not been charged yet. The sheriff's office is still investigating. They say it's just a matter of time before an arrest is made. They would not say if the person was a resident, business owner or associated with either.

In addition, the American Legion is making a push for donations for the families and businesses affected by the fire.

They will be collecting items and monetary donations at the Wayne County Fairgrounds 4-H Building today and tomorrow. Volunteers are needed Saturday 9a to 12p and Sunday 1p to 4p to unload vehicles, do "put-away", dust and clean any donated items that need it, and move items and box loads around the building.
