The roaring crowds, visiting teams and television trucks have packed up and left Boswell Field, but the 2013 ECAC Lacrosse League Tournament is just starting to make its mark on Geneva. Thanks to the Lax4Lunches initiative, Hobart College Lacrosse Head Coach T.W. Johnson and junior attackman Cam Stone had the privilege of presenting representatives of the Geneva Community Lunch Program with a check for more than $2,200.
In appreciation for the HWS community's support throughout the year, Hobart Athletics extended free admission to the ECAC tournament at the Boz on May 2 and May 4 to all members of the HWS community, students, staff and faculty. The Hobart Lacrosse Team asked the HWS community to make a donation to the Community Lunch Program as they entered Boswell Field. The HWS Community and fans in general responded generously with donations during the three games surpassing $1,000.
Members of the Statesmen Athletic Association Board of Directors made personal donations that more than doubled the fan contributions, resulting in a $2,208.16 gift to the Community Lunch Program.
Every summer the demand at the Community Lunch Program skyrockets as many children are out of school and turn to the program daily for their midday meal. The Statesmen lacrosse team created Lax4Lunches to help keep the pantry adequately stocked this summer for Geneva's kids.
The Geneva Community Lunch Program is sponsored by the Geneva Interfaith Council and is administered by the Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes.
It is staffed by community volunteers. The program provides a free, hot meal to anyone in need, Monday through Friday, beginning at 11:45 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church on S. Main St. in Geneva.
