Digging in the Dirt-At the Waterloo Community Garden

WATERLOO - The Waterloo Community Garden needs your help. Members are in need of a roto tiller-big or small, whatever size. They need to get their plots tilled so they can plant in the next week or two, if not sooner. If you know anyone, or you have a tiller that can come to the garden and till the plots, please contact Jennifer Dressing, 315-220-8127, Ruth Townson-Eads at 315-539-2536,  or Josh McKimm at 315-515-7964.  Both Ruth and Josh also can be reached on Saturday mornings at the Harmony Food Pantry located at the First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo.

If you wish to donate, checks can be made out to “Waterloo Community Garden”.  Any Waterloo resident can join the gardening fun for FREE by registering with name, address and phone number.  Contact one of the people above to get your registration form, rules and regulations of the garden.

Finger News Radio's Greg Cotterill got a little dirty helping with his machine Monday afternoon.

The garden is located on the corner of Swift Street and East Wright Ave., behind the water tower and Lake Country Christian Church.  They have 2 raised beds for those who have trouble getting down on their hands and knees, or are in a wheelchair.  Last year, thyme, oregano and basil were grown in one of these beds.  This year they hope to grow more herbs and some flowers.

Last week two 250-gallon holding tanks for water were donated to the garden by Zugue’s winery, helping insure that the garden will have water throughout the growing season.  The garden still needs fencing because the neighborhood critters have discovered the lush “snack bar,” and some gardening tools such as rakes, shovels and garden hoses.  Cash donations to purchase these items also are welcome.
