Trial Set for Death of Fairport Teacher

The two charged for the Fairport teacher, biker enthusiast and mom killed in a fatal accident due to drunk and reckless driving in Penfield on July 29th last year are set for trial.  23 year old Mark Scerbo of Penfield and 24 year old Meagan Merkel of Ontario in Wayne County are scheduled for trial starting Monday in Monroe County Court. 

Both are charged with manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.  According to police 40 year old Heather Boyum of Perinton was riding her bike along a road in Penfield when she was hit by a motorcycle driven by Scerbo which threw her into the road where she was hit by a car driven by Merkel. 

Boyum is a 1993 William Smith graduate and was the college's  first diving recruit and ended up as one of the best in school history, winning conference and state championships and qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships. Boyum was president of the William Smith Athletic Association during her senior year. See also just competed in this summer's Musselman Half-Iron race in Geneva.
