Canandaigua Man and Dog Died in Sunday's Car Fire

State Police have identified the man who died last Sunday in a car fire at Boughton Park in East Bloomfield.

50-year old Brett G. Shay, of Canandaigua,  had just finished walking the family dog and suffered a heart attack immediately after he pulled out of his parking spot to leave the East Bloomfield park. The exact cause of the fire has not been determined.

After Shay suffered the heart attack, the vehicle proceeded on its own into the woods and police say as the vehicle drove over several saplings a brake line or engine component was likely damaged, which provided flammable liquids. It’s believed that these liquids combined with the heat from the engine and ignited the fire.

An autopsy by the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Shay died prior to the start of the fire. Police said the dog died in the fire.
