The Corning man that stole thousands of dollars from the Corning Veterans of Foreign Wars was sentenced to six months in Steuben County Jail Monday.
Edward Bassett was also ordered to pay more than 24-THOUSAND dollars in restitution, in addition to the 10-THOUSAND he paid prior to Monday's sentencing. Bassett pleaded guilty in February to felony grand larceny and offering a false instrument for filing.
The investigation into the missing funds started in January 2011 after a VFW membe filed a complain with police and the State Racing and Wagering Board. A longtime member and former commander, Bassett stole thousands of dollars from games of chance he ran at the Corning VFW.
