The Corning man accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the Corning Veterans of Foreign Wars pleaded guilty in Steuben County Court Monday.
Edward Bassett was charged with third-degree felony grand larceny, indicating the alleged theft was between 3 and 50-THOUSAND dollars. It's not known the exact amount of money stolen.
The investigation into the missing funds started in January 2011 after a VFW member filed a complaint with police and the State Racing and Wagering Board. A longtime member and former commander, Bassett stole thousands of dollars from games of chance he ran at the Corning VFW. Bassett will be sentenced in April.
He recently resigned from his position as town of Hornby Planning Clerk.
