A man had to be rescued Tuesday after falling through the ice on the south end of Waneta Lake in the town of Wayne.
The unidentified victim was said to be conscious and speaking after being pulled out from near the shore in the bitter cold by Wayne First Assistant Fire Chief Charles Swarthout. He was airlifted to an unknown hospital.
Swarthout told the Corning Leader the thin ice on the lake hampered getting to the man quicker. He was in the frigid water for approximately an hour. It's believed the man was attempting to cross the lake on his motorcycle when he fell through.
Dundee Ambulance assisted at the scene, as did Hammondsport and Tyrone firefighters, ALS and local law enforcement.
