It's a new way to bring business to downtown Geneva. The Geneva Local Development Corporation (LDC) is starting a Race for the Space competition in which a firm will win "a package of services for starting or moving a business downtown." The competition is modeled after a similar contest in Ithaca.
The winner would get storefront space and a year free rent, architectural aid and signage along with marketing help and a one year membership in the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce. Neighborhood Initiatives Director Sage Gerling says this takes some of the load off a fledgling business.
The winner would be locked into a 3 year lease and would have to pay for things like utilities and insurance. Interested applicants should visit www.geneva.ny.us for complete rules, regulations, and a pre-application. Pre-applications must be received by the Geneva Neighborhood Resource Center no later than 4:00 PM on January 21, 2013.
