Final election results in the 24th Congressional District show the count of absentee and paper ballots favored Dan Maffei, giving him a nearly 16,000-vote victory over Ann Marie Buerkle. According to the state Board of Elections, Maffei won by 6 percentage points, finishing with 49% to 43% for Buerkle.
Green Party nominee Ursula Rozum finished with 8% of the vote. That was the highest percentage a Green Party candidate has received in a Central New York congressional race. Polls before the election showed the two in a statistical dead heat prompting special-interest groups to spend more than $5 million supporting the Buerkle and Maffei campaigns.
It was the most expensive race for a congressional seat in Central New York history.
