Voters in Union Springs have approved the fire department's hope for a new rescue boat. After a 121 to 19 vote, fire chief Garret Waldron said he was very happy with the people's decision. We reported Monday that the department wanted to buy a 30-foot rescue boat to replace two amphibious ducks destroyed in an explosion in 2010.
The new boat -- at a price of $275,000 -- comes equipped with sonar, a fire pump and a large deck for divers. The money will partially come from the department's own fund, with the rest in the form of a 10-year bond.
