Two people were killed Thursday when a helicopter crashed near the Chemung River in the city of Corning. The helicopter contracted by NYSEG crashed while inspecting transmission lines just inside the Steuben County city.

City police and fire departments responded and found the helicopter crashed on the flood control system just East of Corning East High School. The helicopter had two occupants, both were killed in the crash.

The pilot, who worked for the company that owned the chopper, was a 24-year-old from Eugene, Oregon. The passenger was a local NYSEG employee based out of the Horseheads office. Their Identification is not being released at this time pending positive identification and notice of family. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
