Auburn's annual RISE and Walk breast cancer fundraiser-scheduled for this Sunday- has been cancelled.
Organizers say they cannot afford fees being charged by the city.
The fundraiser has been held for the past 10 years and the city never charged organizers, not so this year. $200 to rent a stage, $50 dollars for a sound system, $45 dollars to hang a banner over the street, and the group needs insurance. Total cost around a thousand dollars.
City manager Doug Selby tells the Auburn Citizen in the past those fees were sometimes waived by other city managers, but Auburn's fiscal position now requires closer scrutiny of how city employees are used.
Organizers say even though there will not be a walk this yearthey plan to release some pink balloons on Loop Road Sunday.
