Help Seneca Community Players Celebrate 40 Years of Community Theater

Go ahead, do the math.  Seneca Community Players’ Fabulous Forty Show is adding up to be the biggest show of their history.  Five directors, three musical directors, 100 actors, singers and dancers, all of them local residents, will recreate 29 scenes and songs from the last 40 years of community theatre.  This Saturday’s, October 13th, one-performance-only show combines the talents of current Players as well as many original cast members dating back to when the group first began.

In the summer of 1972, Warren Blackstone and Sieghard Krueger, who were directing plays at Eisenhower College, came up with the idea of starting an adult summer theatre in the Finger Lakes.  “An organizational meeting was held and good folks such as Ann Kieffer, Mary Flett, Jerry Maschio, Barry Bradshaw, Joan Reardon and myself all took on jobs to help get things rolling along” said Jim Bero, Seneca Falls resident and original member.  Jobs like directing, soliciting membership, costumes, props, creating by-laws and fundraising were quickly passed out among the organizers with the idea to have a six-play summer season with a two-week run for each play.  “Actors came to us from Eisenhower College, the local community, and from all throughout the central Finger Lakes area to work with Warren Blackstone, Sieg Krueger and Musical Director Morrie Bleiwas” said Bero.  “Names like Leland Dewey, Don Whitman, Mike Nozzolio  and Howard VanKirk were listed regularly as actors on early SCP playbills.”

SCP’s Fabulous Forty Show will highlight scenes and musical numbers from shows such as Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Arsenic And Old Lace, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Nunsense, Little Shop of Horrors, West Side Story, Enchanted April, Cabaret, A Christmas Story, Footloose, Tuesday’s With Morrie, Godspell, and many more.  “We are pleased to have veteran SCP actor and local celebrity Carol Ritter-Wright as our Master of Ceremonies for the show,” said Becky Bly producer and executive director of the show, “She brings with her years of talent and exuberant charm to our stage.  This is a one-performance-only multi-media multi-talented show that is not to be missed!”

SCP’s Fabulous Forty Show will be staged Saturday, October 13th, at 8:00 p.m. at the Waterloo High School auditorium, 96 Stark Street, Waterloo.  Tickets are $15 and are available in advance and at the door.

Those wishing to reconnect with past and present SCP players are invited to attend the "Come Home to SCP" reunion dinner which kicks off the weekend on Friday, October 12, at 6:00 p.m. at the Seneca Falls /Waterloo Holiday Inn - located at 2468 Mound Road (State Route 414) in Waterloo, NY.  Past and present players, along with the public, are invited to come and reminisce.  The evening will include dinner, music, a cash bar & surprises throughout the evening.  Tickets are $30, and reservations are required.
