The Corning man charged in connection with the murder of a Schuyler County resident pled guilty to a first-degree manslaughter charge Thursday. Nathan Hand told the court the man that killed Daniel Bennett April 19th is dead. Hand said he and Thomas Borden of Corning went to Bennett's Pearl Street home in the town of Dix that evening with the understanding an assault would take place. Hand said Borden shot Bennett to death in the home.
Bennett was discovered a short time later by his father, who he shared the home with but was asleep during the late night confrontation.
After an arrest warrant was obtained for Borden just days after the shooting, he jumped in front of a passenger train while fleeing from police in Pennsylvania. Under a plea agreement, Hand will serve 19 years in prison. Hand has already testified before the county grand jury against Alice Trappler of Addison, who is charged with second-degree murder in the killing. Hand has agreed to testify against Trappler at her trial.
Trappler and Bennett had a child together.
