Sheriff: State of Emergency in Yates County

6:00AM – May 14, 2014 ------Pursuant to the General Municipal Law (209-f 2a) Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike has declared that a SPECIAL STATE OF EMERGENCY exists in parts of the County of Yates, especially in the village of Penn Yan and the town of Jerusalem where life or property may be endangered due to heavy rains producing major flooding of streams and rain water closing highways and eroding portions of highways, flooding homes, businesses, causing temporary shelters established and schools closed. Many state, county and local roads are an endangerment due to debris, power lines down, and moving water, etc. All emergency services have been active over night. Travelers should use caution as many roads and highways are not safe for passage due to the flooding conditions. The rains and flooding continues. The Governor’s office has been notified.
