Geneva City Councilor Jackie Augustine says if the city leases its lakefront events center to a private operator, it will have essentially built a private facility with taxpayer money.
At a public hearing last week, the Council discussed whether to lease the facility or to run it with city staff. A decision is expected at next month's council meeting.
Augustine is concerned about a possible conflict of interest if the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce runs the city's lakefront Visitors Center. She says it would be in the Chamber's, but not necessarily the city's best interests, to refer visitors to businesses that are Chamber members.
Augustine says recent discussions between the Chamber and the Geneva BID about sharing services further complicates the picture. Augustine was a guest on the Finger Lakes Morning News. Listen to the full conversation here.
