Basic STAR Tax Exemption Registration Deadline Nears

We know you've heard an awful lot of talk lately about signing up for a New York State Basic STAR tax exemption. It doesn't apply to every household, but it does apply to several million people statewide. Eligible homeowners have until the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day to register with the state tax department to receive their Basic STAR exemptions in 2014. Cary Ziter is with the New York State Department of Tax and Finance. Ziter tells Finger Lakes News Radio the program has been around for a long time.

Since launching 15 years ago, it has meant being able to put some more money in your wallet.

Ziter says fraud in the program since it began led to Governor Andrew Cuomo signing a reform.

You can register online at www.tax.ny.gov, which takes only a few minutes. You can also call 518-457-2036 to sign up over the phone. Ziter was a guest on the Finger Lakes Morning News on WAUB. Listen to the full interview here.
