October 2015
12:00 AM - 12:00 PM

The Seneca Falls American Legion Post 366 invites you to join in the Commander's Can Jam.

It has been brought to our attention that cans of soup & other canned items are difficult to keep stocked at the House of Concern's food pantry and with the colder weather approaching, we want to HELP!

Through the month of October, Kirk-Casey Post 366 will be collecting canned goods that will be donated to the House of Concern's Food Pantry.  Each canned good donated gets your name entered into the drawing for a gift certificate to a local establishment.  Each can of soup, gets 2 entries.

Let's show our community how much we care & help stock those shelves.

Please feel free to contact Julie Scott, Commander with any questions, comments, or concerns @ 315-568-8091.  The Post is located at 48 State Street, Seneca Falls.

Fall Foliage Tour Map
1:00 AM - 1:00 AM
Canandaigua, NY - The Ontario County Historical Society's new fundraiser shows off the best that October has to offer - fall colors at their peak in the Bristol Hills. Maps are available starting next week for this month-long October event.
The southern Ontario County towns of Bristol, South Bristol and Naples are known for their autumn beauty. The Fall Foliage Trail map takes guests through these towns, their villages and hamlets and provides historical stops and local shops to visit and the best places to take photos of the fall scenery.
Discover the quaintness of Bristol Springs and stop at the Arbor Hill Winery or have lunch at the Brown Hound Bistro. Explore local history at stops like South Bristol Historical Society's Grange building. In Naples, visit Monica's Pies, Inspire Moore Winery or Neapolitan Pizza to enter a raffle to win great prizes. At the Reservoir Creek Golf Course enter the raffle to win free rounds of golf. Each map is good for the entire month of October, so come back again.
Community Day, October 17, will be a memorable day with access to
special tours at select stops shown on the Trail Map. Eight behind-the-scenes tours will be offered at historical places like the Bristol Valley Theater, Burning Springs archaeological dig and Naples Historical Society Museum.
Bring the camera! Eighteen "photo ops" marked on the Fall Foliage Trail map offer great places for photos, along curving country roads, in historic cemeteries, at scenic overlooks and with historic buildings. A photo contest, sponsored by the Ontario County Arts Council, offers $300 for the best photo, along with several other cash prizes. Entries for up to 3 photos are $25 for adults over 18 and free for youth shutterbugs. For more information on the contest and its rules, visit www.ochs.org.
A $20 donation to the Ontario County Historical Museum earns a map, an information folder and four wristbands for access to the October 17 Community Days activities. The map packets will be available starting September 8 at several locations in the region, including the Ontario County Historical Museum located at 55 North Main Street in Canandaigua, selected Canandaigua National Bank and Trust main and branch offices, The Geneva Historical Society, Arbor Hill Winery, the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce, The Naples Library and online at www.ochs.org. Fall Gardening Symposium
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

On October 10th Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park will host Wayne Cahilly from the New York Botanical Garden as the keynote speaker for their Fall Gardening Symposium. In the Symposium, Wayne will share deep insight into the care, management, and beauty of America’s most stunning historic public gardens as well as leading attendees on a guided tour of the 100-year old Sonnenberg Arboretum.

For more than 25 years, Wayne Cahilly has worked at the New York Botanical Garden where he is currently the Site Historian and Manager of the Institutional Mapping Department. Wayne provides such a unique blending of both horticultural and historical expertise and passion that lovers of history as well as gardens will find great interest in his lecture, Historic Garden Landscapes Across America. And as a certified arborist who has provided professional tree-care and management services for more than 30 years, Wayne will provide a unique experience as he leads attendees on a guided tour of one of Sonnenberg’s greatest and most intact collections, the trees of its arboretum many of which were planted by Sonnenberg’s original owners Frederick and Mary Clark Thompson.

The Symposium will take place Saturday, October 10th, 10 am – 5 pm. Tickets for this event are $60 per person and $50 per Sonnenberg members. Prepaid reservations are required and may be made by calling 585-394-4922 or visiting www.sonnenberg.org/event. Symposium admission will include lunch on the mansion veranda (weather permitting) as well as admission to Sonnenberg’s gardens, mansion, and greenhouses.

Book Signing
10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Roz Murphy, author of Bob at the Lake and Bob at the Plaza, will be signing copies of her books at Keuka Spring Vineyards Saturday, October 10 from 10 am to 4 pm. The books are available for sale at the winery for $11.99.

A longtime resident of the Keuka Lake area, Roz has set this popular whimsical series amidst the wineries, shops, and landmarks of this beautiful area. Bob at The Plaza continues the saga of our favorite martini-loving ghost from the jazz age, Bob, and Roz, his crabby hostess, as they try to enjoy springtime on Crooked Lake. She loves meeting her readers at these signings and the only question she's never answered (so far...) is whether Bob really haunts her house on the water. According to Roz, "If a tough work week makes you crave a few laughs to unwind, try Bob at the Plaza-it's the perfect Friday night read. Pairs beautifully with Chinese takeout and a bottle of your favorite Keuka Spring wine!"
