April 2014
Photograph Drawing
1:00 AM - 1:00 AM

The Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is conducting a drawing for two beautiful photographs taken and donated by Pauline Champlin. One photo is “Sunflowers in the Finger Lakes” and the other is “Apple Orchard & Keuka Lake in Springtime”.

The photographs are being displayed in the main lobby of the hospital, 418 North Main Street, Penn Yan. Tickets are available at the Peppermint Parlor at Soldiers & Sailors, from members of the Auxiliary and volunteers at Soldiers & Sailors. Tickets are $1 each; 3 for $2 or 10 for $5. The drawing will be held on Friday, May 2. The holder of the first ticket drawn will get to pick the photograph he/she wants and the other one will go to the holder of the second ticket drawn.

Proceeds from the drawing will be used by the Auxiliary to supports projects at the Hospital and Homestead, including the annual fund to enhance access to healthcare for area residents.

Art and Craft Show
1:00 AM - 1:00 AM

Thompson Health Guild will present the third annual Springtime in Canandaigua art and craft show Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27, at the Greater Canandaigua Civic Center, 250 North Bloomfield Road, during the following times:

          Friday, April 25 3-7 PM

          Saturday, April 26 10 AM-5 PM

          Sunday, April 27 10 AM-4 PM

A talented field of 90 artists from 8 states will display and sell their works, including paintings, pottery, sculpture, wood carvings, jewelry, photography, glass, fiber, gourmet foods and much more. Jurying of these participating artists’ works will take place on Friday, with an awards presentation in the evening. A number of gardening seminars will be scheduled throughout the weekend. New this year will be mini-concerts featuring Canandaigua students and the outdoor courtyard will be filled with Rochester food trucks offering a delicious variety of cuisine.

Prize drawings for pieces donated by the exhibiting artists will take place on Sunday afternoon. Tickets will be on sale throughout the event. You do not need to be present to win.

The fundraiser’s 2014 beneficiary is Thompson Health’s new Women’s Health and Wellness Center. This innovative facility will create a patient-centered continuum of care currently unavailable in the Finger Lake’s region, health care specifically designed around a woman’s optimal breast health and bone wellness.

“The event would not be possible without the generous support of numerous sponsors and volunteers,” says Marianne Gallagher, Director of Springtime in Canandaigua. As Emily Dickinson once said, ‘A little madness in the spring is wholesome, even for a queen.’  ” We invite the community to come and enjoy the event; a time for sunshine, flowers and you.”

Arbor Day 2014
10:00 AM - 10:30 AM

The City of Geneva and Geneva City Shade Tree Committee will be celebrating Arbor Day by planting Kwanzan Cherry trees along the walking path at Brook Street Park on April 25, at 10:00 AM. School children and community members will be involved in the planting. All are welcome to attend and help out.

Arbor Day provides a unique opportunity to demonstrate our community’s commitment to improving our environment and providing educational experiences for our young and old. The City’s Shade Tree Committee assists the City with creating and maintaining a healthy, functional, and safe urban forest. You can learn more about the Shade Tree Committee and the benefit of urban street trees at genevatrees.org.

The Kwanzan cherry tree is a remarkable choice for the Brook Street Park walking path. The beautiful double pink flowers and bronze leaves that change to dark green, yellow, orange and copper in the autumn will accentuate the existing aesthetic qualities of the park.

The Walking Path Improvement Project was made possible by the collaboration of the City of Geneva’s Department of Public Works, the Hildreth Hill Neighborhood Association and the Castle Heights Neighborhood Association and was completed in 2012.

The City of Geneva began celebrating Arbor Day in April 1999 with, then Mayor, Joanne Wisor and Middle School students, by planting a Tulip tree on South Main Street. Every year since, a celebration with a City Proclamation has taken place at various locations in the City.

From a single tree to an entire street re-planting, the City of Geneva has maintained its Tree City status for 15 years. The Tree City designation recognizes municipalities that effectively manage their community trees, develop connectivity with the community to foster healthy urban forests and strive to engage their community. http://www.arborday.org/
