Master Gardener Program Seeks Volunteers
1:00 AM - 1:00 AM

The Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county Cornell Cooperative Extension offices to extend gardening information to the local community. Over 1,500 volunteer Master Gardeners in New York State contribute educational services to meet the outreach mission of Cornell, educating thousands of consumers on horticultural issues.  Here in Yates County, the Master Gardeners are very active and provide a variety of educational programming to the community, including: Yard N’ Garden Day, Windmill Plant Sale, public service hotline, Penn Yan Community Garden, invasive species tracking, Farmers’ Markets, and many other community actions.

To be an active Master Gardener in Yates County, volunteers must attend the ten-week regional training offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension.  The next training is being offered September – December, 2013 in Geneva.  After the training, Master Gardeners are expected to volunteer for 60 hours of service to the Yates County Master Gardener program over a two-year period.  These hours can be completed in a variety of ways.

Anyone can become a Master Gardener; you do not need to be an expert.  This is a great opportunity for anyone who likes to garden and would like to share their knowledge with other gardeners.  If you would like to learn more about the program before committing to the training, we encourage involvement in the program as a shadow volunteer.  As a shadow, you will have the opportunity to work with current volunteers during their educational events and learn all about the Master Gardener Program.

Again, the next Master Gardener training will begin in September so you have plenty of time to see what the program is all about and decide for yourself if you would like to be involved.  However, if you love gardening and want to share your interest with others, Master Gardeners just might be the group for you!

Please contact Elizabeth Newbold at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office at 315-536-5123 for more information.
