Day 1 – Business and Legal Issues

Are you planning on starting a new brewery or cidery or interested in learning more about the legal and business issues involved with starting a brewery or cidery?
If so, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Seneca County is hosting a Brewery and Cidery Startup Workshop (Day 1) on Friday, May 9th, 2014 from 8:30 am to 4:45 pm at the Waterloo Holiday Inn on Rte. 414 in Waterloo, NY. The workshop will be followed by a social hour from 4:45 to 6:00 pm that will include tastings of local craft beers and ciders. This workshop is meant to give you an overview of the information and tools you will need to start a new Farm Brewery or Cidery business. Come learn about the NYS Farm Brewery law, craft beverage marketing, brewing and cider equipment, tax implications for a brewery or cidery, business planning, local zoning issues, alternative funding strategies, financing a brewery/cidery and more. There will also be a trade show with representatives from companies selling items related to beer and cider production and growing hops, barley and cider apples and other relevant organizations.
The cost is $65 or $55 for additional people from the same aspiring brewery or cidery. This includes a light breakfast, lunch and an evening social hour.
Speakers for Day One include: Sam Filler- Craft Beverage Specialist for Empire State Development, Bill Barton- Bellwether Cider, Whitney Russell- NYS Office of Building Standards and Codes and The Lake George Zoning Board and Victor Pultinas- Lake Drum Brewing.
Day 2: Production Issues

Are you interested in learning more about breweries, growing hops and barley or cideries and growing apples for cider?
Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension is hosting a Brewery or Cidery Startup Workshop (Day 2) on May 10th, 2014. Day two of the Brewery and Cidery Startup workshop will focus on production issues and will include classroom sessions (starting at 8:30 am at the Waterloo Holiday Inn) and an optional field trip (from 11:00- 3:30) to Climbing Bines Hopyard and Farm Brewery and a nearby barley field or Belwether Cidery and Black Diamond Farm. Classroom sessions will include a brewing track and a cidery track.
The cost is $30 for the classroom sessions (which includes a continental breakfast) and an additional $30 for either of the field trips (which includes a bagged lunch). There is a $5 discount for the classroom sessions if you are also registered for day 1. Speakers for Day Two include: Bill Verbeten- Cornell’s NWNY Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Team, Steve Miller- Cornell’s NYS Hops Specialist and Ian Merwin- Cornell Department of Horticulture.
