What constitutes a family? Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel offers provocative and touching answers to that question in her darkly hilarious And Baby Makes Seven. Headless Sullivan Theater re-emerges with Vogel’s edgy comedy January 31st and February 1st, February 7th-8th at 8:30 p.m. at the Jones Theatre in Geneva.
Ruth (Michelle Martin-Baron) and Anna (Sherri Martin-Baron) are a lesbian couple awaiting the birth of their baby. They share their small New York City apartment with their dear friend Peter (Charles King)…and three imaginary children. The lines between reality and imagination, pleasure and pain disintegrate as the trio struggles to make room in their lives for their newest child. And Baby Makes Seven has been hailed by critics as “startling and funny,” “a profound and clever comedy,” and “a hilariously inventive play.” Audience members should be advised that And Baby Makes Seven contains explicit language and adult content.
Headless Sullivan Theater is Geneva’s own absurdist theater group, founded in 2009. Their goal is to bring new theater to new audiences in new spaces. This production marks a brand new collaboration with The Jones Theatre. Established in 2013 above the KidVenture Dome (499 Exchange St., Geneva), the Jones Theatre has been offering cult film screenings throughout the summer and fall. In 2014 the Jones is expanding its offerings to include an eclectic array of live performance.
And Baby Makes Seven will be directed by Headless Sullivan newcomer Chris Woodworth, a Geneva native who recently returned to the area, having joined the Theatre faculty at Hobart & William Smith Colleges.
Tickets for all performances are $5.00 and can be purchased in advance at Area Records and Music and the KidVenture Dome or at the door, based on availability. Seating is general admission. Concessions will be available for purchase from the Jones Theatre before the performance and during intermission.
