Documentary Looks at Underrepresentation of Women in Spheres of Power, Influence

Miss Representation, a 90-minute, award-winning documentary film that exposes how mainstream media contributes to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence in America, will be shown at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 30 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The screening is free and open to the public. A half hour of discussion will follow.

The local screening of Miss Representation is being presented by the Zonta Club of Geneva, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the League of Women Voters of Geneva, the Yates County Branch of the American Association of University Women, the Boys and Girls Club of Geneva at the Geneva Community Center, the Geneva Public Library and Lake to Lake Women. Miss Representation challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman or girl to feel powerful herself.

The film will be shown in the Sanford Room in the Warren Hunting Smith Library on Pulteney St. on the HWS Campus. Parking is available at the Medberry Parking lot; a campus map is available at

Miss Representation was written, directed and produced by writer, speaker and former actress Jennifer Siebel Newsom. The film premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. is a non-profit social action campaign and media organization established to shift people’s consciousness, inspire individual and community action, and ultimately transform culture so everyone, regardless of gender, age or circumstance can fulfill their potential.
