The greater Marcus Whitman community has rallied in support of Marcus Whitman Middle School 6th grader Morgan Smithling who is battling Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. On Saturday, May 11th a Day of Caring/Chicken BBQ will be held from 12 noon to 6pm at the Gorham Intermediate School, 2705 State Route 245, and will benefit the Morgan Smithling Care Fund to help defray her ongoing medical expenses.
The Day of Caring will feature a Chicken BBQ, Bake Sale, Cake Wheel, Rummage Sale, Raffle, Kids’ Activities, T-shirt and Bracelet Sales, Live Entertainment and a Live Auction. Chicken BBQ dinners include: chicken, potatoes, salad, roll, butter and a drink. Pre-sale tickets are available from: Crown Jewelers, Sweet Expressions, Total Body Image, Don’s Inn and all Marcus Whitman schools for $10 each.
The numerous organizations with which Morgan is involved have united to make this event a success. Morgan is a State ranked competitive swimmer; the Whitman Area Swim Club will be selling bracelets. She is a 4-H member; the Barnyard Critters 4-H Club will be on hand with a petting zoo. Morgan is a resident of Hopewell; the Hopewell community is hosting the Rummage sale. She is a Girl Scout; her leaders and troop members are spearheading the event. She is a beloved daughter and granddaughter; her family has been involved in planning and her grandma will be on hand to sell Forget Me Not earrings. Morgan is a friend to many; some of her classmates “The Yellow Butterflies” will be selling homemade creations and many of her former teachers will be on hand volunteering.
