Canandaigua Centennial Speaker Series
Thursday, January 10 2013 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
As part of the 2013 Centennial Celebration of the City of Canandaigua, the Ontario County Historical Society has planned a Centennial Speaker Series to celebrate the city's history. The speaker events and forum will be held on select Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:00pm at Canandaigua City School District Middle School Auditorium throughout the year. All four are free and open to the public. The series includes three presentations on Canandaigua history and culminates with a community forum on the future of the city. Each speaker will focus on one of the three main phases of history and highlight issues that were critical to the city's development. Attendees can expect to learn about immigration, suffrage, temperance and prohibition, civil rights, feminism, abolitionism, politics, the economy, transportation and entertainment. The series kicks off on January 10 with the Settlement of Canandaigua. The first speaker, Ray Shedrick, will cover the settlement as part of the development of Western New York from 1650 through the 1700s. Mr. Shedrick is the current Staff Educator for the Ontario County Historical Society and an adjunct faculty member of the History Department at Finger Lakes Community College.
