Awareness, fact gathering, and planning in the face of uncertainty are important elements of community preparation.    To assist government officials and policy makers in making sound decisions, the Cornell University/Cornell Cooperative Extension Marcellus Shale Team and Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension (SCCCE) are sponsoring a webinar entitled Municipal Planning and Managing Potential Impacts from Natural Gas Development: Practical Steps Local Governments Can Take on Tuesday, June 12th from 3 pm to 4:45 pm at the SCCCE’s office on the 3rd floor of the Main Street Shop Centre in Waterloo.  This educational event is targeted specifically to elected officials, planning staff, planning board members and community task force members. The presentation will review key issues that will need to be addressed by municipalities that are seeking to monitor the issues, minimize or avoid negative impacts, and take advantage of any potential benefits.  Presenters will include David Kay, Senior Extension Associate at the Cornell Community and Regional Development Institute (CaRDI) and Department of Development Sociology and Darby Kiley, the Environmental Planner for the Town of Ulysses in Tompkins County.   “Drilling in the Marcellus Shale will continue to be a hot topic in the Finger Lakes and governmental leaders have to have good information to be able to ask the right questions and make sound decisions for their municipalities and citizens.” said SCCCE Executive Director Ave Bauder.  “Cornell Cooperative Extension has always been and will continue to be a source of unbiased information so that people can reach their own decisions based on factual knowledge.  We wanted to offer this webinar in a public forum to help people make contacts and encourage dialogue.”   The event is free.  Registration is not required but appreciated and can be done by calling the SCCCCE office at 315-539-9251 or e-mailing Seneca@Cornell.edu.
