SUMMARY:Forage Management Workshop
LOCATION:480 North Main St. Canandaigua 14424
DESCRIPTION:Finger Lakes Forage Management WorkshopThursday, March 28, 20139:30 AM - 12 NoonCornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County480 North Main Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424 Canandaigua, NY - Forages in the Finger Lakes region are in very tight supply for dairy and other livestock farms due to erratic weather and the 2012 armyworm outbreak. New options in crop type and fertility management are available for farmers who need to produce high-yielding, high-quality hay, silage, and other livestock feeds. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County welcomes Bill Verbeten, a Cornell University Extension Field Crop Specialist as the lead presenter at an informative morning seminar on Thursday, March 28, 2013 in Canandaigua, NY. Bill will explain how to maximize forage yields by consistently providing a high level of management. From planting right through harvest and record-keeping, it is important to set realistic yield goals, optimize nutrients, choose appropriate seed, anticipate problems, and control pests. Bill will also explain shredlage and how it differs from kernel-processed corn silage and the effects it has on milk production, intake, and ration balancing. There will be a special emphasis on small grain silage production and economics based on oats, winter triticale, and other small grains. Fee: $15.00 per person. Pre-registration is required by March 26, 2013 by calling Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County at (585) 394-3977 x427 or e-mail Nancy with your full contact information to nea8@cornell.edu
