SUMMARY:Poetry Reading
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:Children’s poet Ted Scheu will read from his poetry Thursday, Oct. 18, at Keuka College.Part of the College’s Spotlight Series, the reading begins at 7 p.m. in the Gannett Room of Lightner Library. It is free and open to the public. Scheu, a nationally-known children’s writer, has been published in more than two dozen anthologies and poetry collections in the United States and abroad. His poems are based on his childhood memories and his experience as an elementary school teacher and parent. “In my poems, I try to capture the silliness and sadness, the worries and the wonders, of being a kid—whether it’s school life, or the surprising things that happen at home and with friends,” said Scheu. “My goal in my writing, and especially in my teaching, is to help kids find their own voices. Poetry is the best way I’ve found to get kids revved up about their writing. It’s a simple format and easy emotional connections seem to open hearts and get pencils dancing.”His poems include Now I Know My ZBCs, 59 School Poems for Young Gigglers, I Threw My Brother Out, A Laughable Lineup of Sports Poems, I Tickled My Teachers, 58 Hilariously Heartful School Poems, I Froze My Mother and Other Seriously Funny Family Poems, and Warning, Don’t Eat More Than Three. Scheu’s work has appeared in such anthologies as What I Did on My Summer Vacation, I Hope I Don’t Strike Out, My Teacher’s in Detention, If I Ran the School, If Kids Ruled the School, Rolling in the Aisles, Miles of Smiles, and I Invited a Dragon to Dinner. In the United Kingdom, Scheu’s poems have appeared in the anthologies When Granny Won Olympic Gold, The World at Our Feet, How to Embarrass Teachers, Funny Poems for Christmas, The Poetry Store, Disgusting Poems, How to Embarrass Grown-Ups, The Dog Ate My Bus Pass, and You’re Not Going Out Like That!In addition to teaching, Scheu served as an officer in the Navy, banker, advertising executive, ad writer, and carpenter.
