SUMMARY:Geneva, NY Post Office Dedication
LOCATION:Castle St. Geneva, Ny
DESCRIPTION:On September 8, 2012 at 12 pm. A ceremony renaming the post office in Geneva, NY to The CPL. Steven B. Riccione Memorial Post Office, for fallen Geneva war hero Steven Blaine Riccione. Steven was killed in action on September 27, 1967 in Vietnam only 19 days after his 20th birthday. September 8, 2012 would have been his 65th birthday. He was a member of A Co. 2nd Bn. 502d Inf. 101st Airborne Division. The following is from his Award of the Bronze Star Medal for Heroism. " For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force. Private Riccione distinguished Himself by exceptionally valorous actions on Sept. 27, 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a search and destroy mission, Private Riccione's platoon was suddenlybrought under a heavy volume of enemy fire and pinned down. Observing a machinegunner that had been wounded, private Riccione, with complete disregard for his own safety, rushed from his covered position through a vicious hail of enemy fire to aid his wounded comrade. He continuously exposed himself to the withering hail of enemy fire, standing up at times, to place effective fire on enemy positions. When his weapon was struck by an enemy bullet and demolished, he undauntedly picked up a machine gun and charged an enemy bunker, killing two enemy soldiers. Shortly after Private Riccione was mortally wounded while helping evacuate wounded personnel while under heavy enemy fire. Private Riccione's devotion to duty and personal courage, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army." This is only one of his awards he recieved.
