Elsa Helleland Allen, 88, passed away Sunday (July 1, 2018) at Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville, N.Y., following a long illness.
Calling hours are Thursday (July 5) from 5 to 7 p.m. at DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 North Main Street, Geneva, NY. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday (July 6) at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, immediately followed by burial in Gorham Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Geneva Historical Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Elsa was born January 19, 1930 in Painesville, Ohio, the youngest of three daughters of Olav and Agnes (Larsen) Helleland. When she was an infant, they moved to Geneva, N.Y. She graduated from Geneva High School in 1948. She married William A. Allen Jr. on November 11, 1950. They lived in Geneva until 1976, when she and Bill moved to Gorham, N.Y. where they spent many years renovating the Allen family home, Spring Farm. They loved welcoming the extended Allen family each year at Thanksgiving. After Bill’s passing in 2012 Elsa returned to Geneva where she lived until March 2018. Elsa was employed by the National Bank of Geneva beginning in 1949. She held several positions including Supervisor in the Customer Service Department, and retired in 1990 as Assistant Cashier and Officer. She enjoyed the many people that she met during her long career at NBG.
She was a member of the Geneva Historical Society, the Presbyterian Church in Geneva, Seneca Yacht Club, and the Geneva Country Club. Her many interests included knitting, reading, gardening, and traveling. She especially enjoyed her trips to Norway. She also enjoyed many family get-togethers with her sisters and their families on holidays and at Seneca Lake.
She is survived by her son, William A. Allen III (Alice Evarts) of Long Valley, N.J.; daughter, Susan Anagnost (Steve) of Manlius, N.Y.; four grandchildren Kristen E. Allen (Jake Bellucci), William A. Allen IV, Marybeth A. Anagnost, and Christina M. Anagnost; her sister, Astrid H. Mulvey; many nephews, a niece, and many cousins.
Elsa is predeceased by her husband, William A. Allen Jr.; and her sister, Solveig H. Cook.
