Congress has passed a bill sponsored by Senator Chuck Schumer which would create a national database for firefighters with cancer. New York’s senior senator says the National Firefighter Cancer Registry would be the first of its kind. If signed into law by President Trump, the registry would be managed by the Centers for Disease Control.
Schumer’s bill comes after a 5-year study by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, which found that firefighters across the country were suffering from asbestos-related cancer in rapidly growing numbers.
Schumer says firefighters are exposed to dangerous toxins, and that research shows a strong connection between firefighting and an increased risk of several major cancers.
Congress passed the bill late last week.
