The Auburn Police Department has charged an Auburn man in connection with a vehicle larceny investigation.
Det. Bryant Bergenstock reports that on April 22 the department received a walk in report of a vehicle theft, which had occurred two days earlier at the parking lot of the Grant Avenue Plaza at 217 Grant Ave.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the vehicle had been towed and scrapped after the suspect called a scrap yard claiming to be the owner and agreed to sell said vehicle for a set price.
The suspect’s actions during the transaction resulted in false entries to Department of Motor Vehicle records, as well as the business records of the scrap company, and unknowingly involved the company in the theft and destruction of the vehicle.
The suspect, 29-year old Clinton Allwood of Auburn, was arrested on Monday at the Cayuga County Probation Department. He was processed on multiple charges and was held pending arraignment in Auburn City Court.
Det. Bergenstock tells Finger Lakes News Radio the unidentified owner of the 1994 Ford F-150 pickup truck does not know the suspect.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Bergenstock at (315) 258-9880 or the APD at (315) 253-3231.
