CITY OF CANANDAIGUA TO START BACKYARD COMPOSTING PILOT PROGRAM
CANANDAIGUA, NY – Learn how to reduce, reuse, and recycle kitchen, garden, and yard waste by visiting Commons Park, in Canandaigua on Sunday, April 22, from 1:00 -3:00 p.m. This Earth Day event is free and open to the public.
Master Gardeners Kim Ferris, Stacey Fox, and Susie Nettleton will be on hand to answer questions, provide tips on how to start a your backyard compost, and provide handouts.
City residents that do not currently compost will have the opportunity to enroll in the City of Canandaigua’s Backyard Composting PILOT Program. A total of 20 households (five from each ward) are needed to participate in the program. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will receive a free composting bin and kitchen pail and will be required to keep track of their composting journey for 4-6 weeks. There will be a sample of the selected compost bin and kitchen pail for residents to see.
“This event, which is being planned and carried out by group of resident volunteers, is driven by our collective need to reduce and divert waste that currently is sent to the county landfill, which is slated to close in 10 years” said City Manager John Goodwin. Food waste is 20-30% of the waste stream and can be reduced and diverted with backyard composting. Compost can be used in many ways including in gardens, houseplants, lawns and landscape beds.
