Check out what we’ve been up to so far this month!
April, the month we commonly associate with spring in the Finger Lakes, has not yet given us the weather we have hoped for. Despite, we have been busy getting ready for the warmer wave to come and have planned a number of fantastic activities and programs in the coming months.
Our Focus on the Finger Lakes turns to Otisco Lake during the month of April. Otisco, our eastern most Finger Lake, is located 22 miles southwest of Syracuse. Seventh in size among the 11 Finger Lakes, it is 5.4 miles long and is divided into two basins by a rock causeway. The small southern basin is shallow and cloudy, while the northern basin contains the clear water of the main lake. Though there is little undeveloped land in the lake’s watershed, the quick renewal rate of the waters keeps the lake quite clean. Museum staff and volunteers will be sharing more about Otisco, including their adventures around the lake, in the near future.
DID YOU KNOW? Otisco = “waters much dried away” (Iroquois)
On March 24 & 25 staff members, trustees and volunteers were at the Rochester Home and Garden Show sharing FLM&A’s progress and future plans with hundreds of visitors. We had a wonderful time talking to everyone, including many hearing about us for the first time. We really enjoyed watching faces light up with excitement as we shared our story and information about upcoming activities! Nearly 400 ‘pompom’ votes were cast at our ‘Which Finger Lake is Your Favorite’ display with Keuka Lake voted #1.
We are very excited to announce that the Finger Lakes Museum & Aquarium and Hunt Country Vineyards are partnering to showcase and protect the natural wonders of the Finger Lakes. You can read more about this partnership in an article by FLM&A Trustee, Matt Kelly, found in the recent issue of Life in the Finger Lakes magazine or in our latest Blog Post.
During the month of April, Hunt Country Vineyards will be giving 5% of all wine sales made during the month to the Finger Lakes Museum and Aquarium. We do hope you stop up to see them soon and support this wonderful Finger Lakes family business.
Sponsorship Opportunities Available!
FLM&A’s third annual Paddle Keuka 5Kwill be held on Saturday, August 4! The past two years have been splashing successes with kayakers and canoeists attending from all over the Finger Lakes region and many prominent area wineries, restaurants and businesses joining in as sponsors.
As a business supporter, fellow adventure seeker, water lover, or Finger Lakes enthusiast, we hope you will consider becoming a sponsor of this year’s distinctive event. As a sponsor, not only will a similarly minded market gain knowledge and exposure to you and your business, but you also have an opportunity to support something bigger – the creation of a place that inspires appreciation and stewardship of the cultural heritage and ecological evolution of the vast and beautiful Finger Lakes region!
We have various levels of opportunities for you to reach supporters and participants through this great event! Contact us today for more information by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org phone 315-595-2200.

April is National Volunteer Month, and we would not be where we are today without our dedicated FLM&A volunteers! As we gear up for a summer full of programs, we are currently in need of more volunteers to join our team. Volunteers help us move kayaks from our Creekside center to Sugar Creek, help us welcome guests, serve as a museum ambassador in the community, help us with office work, and/or site upkeep. If you have a desire to be a volunteer, we have space for you! If you would like to learn more about our volunteer program and opportunities, please contact Kelley Elliott at email@example.com, or call us at (315) 595-2200
